The problems were originally described only as "AIM not connecting". SNMP failed on random switches, breaking the computer authentication model. Computers that recently authenticated were okay, which defines sporadic problems with users (several calls from several buildings and floors). Three groups of switches began spamming the authentication server with 1000's requests/second. The server's log file filled (2Gb of data!!!!) and crashed the service. The service was brought online in debugging mode; the full log file was not discovered until later - may have caused temporary connection problems for very few random computers.
