How fast
will my connection be?
Depending on the distance between the house and our
equipment and the quality of the line in the house,
the speed can vary from 5 to 15Mbps. The supported
range is up to 5000 feet, which is well within range
of campus for the houses.
Isn't this slower than the residence halls?
Yes. However, the University only has 9.5Mbps of
bandwidth to the Internet. Local
connections (blackboard, beeline, mail) are still
faster than a connection through an outside Internet
Service Provider (ISP) to the University.
Can I use my campus phone and the computer at the
same time?
Yes. Even if the data network is offline or there is
a power outage, your campus telephone should still
work.
How
long does it take to connect to the network?
The connection is always on - you do not have to
dial and wait like dialup.
How many ports will be available to me?
Each phone extension has one Ethernet port;
Information Technology has provided a four port
switch with each phone extension.
Will I have to register my computer for this system?
Yes. Registration is the same as on-campus - the
registration page is at
http://mars.sau.edu
