How to change the Windows XP administrator password

The administrator user is somewhat hidden but is essential to the operation of your computer. The computer administrator has absolute power and control of the computer operating system. However, most systems do not have an administrator password set, exposing the computer to virus and spyware attacks. The administrator can access, modify, or delete any file on the computer.

To set an administrator password on your computer

• Boot into safe mode (hit F8 while rebooting)
• Open the user accounts control panel
• Select Administrator
• Click change password
• Select a secure password that is not easy to forget or guess. 'password', 'admin', or 'administrator' are not good choices as they are the second, third, and fourth passwords hackers and virus writers will attempt; the first choice is <blank>.
• Restart
