Starting from scratch: reformatting and reinstalling

It can be a big task and take some time, but if your computer has been compromised in the past reformatting and reinstalling is the only way to be sure it is 100% clean. Spyware and viruses are becoming increasingly difficult to detect and remove, and even the best removal tools may not detect all the problems.

Be sure to backup all important documents (papers, presentations, and other important data) before beginning!! ALL data is erased when reformatting!!!!!!!

Restart your computer using the CD provided by your computer manufacture. Be sure to select a new install and format, installing on top of your current operating system will not remove spyware or viruses. Once you have completed a new installation, be sure to configure your firewall before connecting your Ethernet cable! Next install OS patches and configure automatic updates. Lastly install antivirus software and 'safe' applications (Acrobat Reader, Winamp, AIM, Yahoo IM, MSN IM, Mozilla Firefox or Opera and other software for which you own from the original installation software (MS Office, Photoshop, printer drivers, games).

After you have gone through all this work be sure to use safe computing habits to keep your machine clean and running properly; avoid P2P programs, IM links, strange email attachments, 'free' software, and risky websites. Read our jump start guide for more information on safe computing.
