Scattered problems. A bug in the firmware for the network equipment supporting Davis, Franklin, Bechtel, Strub, Sudbrook, Andrews, Schneider, and Tiedemann is causing random connection problems for students in their residences.  If you are having problems connecting to AIM, MSN, etc or using your game console please call Information Technology at x6368 or fill out a helpdesk ticket at http://helpdesk.sau.edu. The problem has been escalated to the engineering group of the manufacture; they have duplicated the problem and are working on a fix.  We have put a temporary solution in place that will get you online until the patch arrives. Network maintenance scheduled for April 11 is expected to permanently fix this problem

Network Maintenance. Tuesday, November 22, at 5am we will be restarting the network equipment in Cosgrove, Hagen and Rohlman Halls for firmware updates. Downtime should be limited to no more than 15 minutes.  Update - Upgrades have been completed; if you continue having problems please call the helpdesk at x6368.  Update - There is a serious bug in the current firmware - we are patching and rebooting switches at this time! Expected downtime is five minutes. Update - Problems still exist; we are continually in contact with technical support. Update - The firmware problem has been upgraded to the engineering group - I hope, and don't think anyone is actually seeing a problem from this, yet. Please contact the helpdesk if you are experiencing problems so we can update technical support. Update - It turns out the firmware update did fix our problem but a glitch in the software caused it to hang until one day later (time set for port authentication); all is working well. The engineering group will be fixing this for future customers.

New Virus/Spyware. We are seeing indications (lots of small packets to random addresses from specific computers) of a new virus and/or spyware on the network. Please be sure your operating system is up-to-date, as well as your antivirus and antispyware software! Update - This has been confirmed as badly written software - namely Blubster and Piolet; please read our P2P security information about these types of programs.
